Update on current situation
Here's an update for how things are going. We're going to be frank. Sadly there's a mix of data recovered so far; we've managed to get a backup of the MySQL databases recovered, but only around 50-60gb of data. There is scope for more, however the speed of recovery is very slow (the RAID array frequently drops offline, requiring manual onsite intervention to reboot).
So - please check your current user directory. (You can do this by connecting to ssh.compsoc.man.ac.uk via SSH and looking, or by emailing us for help if you're unsure). If there are files missing or out of date that you need, please let us know and we'll focus our efforts on these files.
Please let us know what files these are before the end of February so that we've time to get to work. If we hear nothing, we'll assume that you have already a backup of your data from which you can recover.
Rest assured that data now stored is being backed up nightly to disk, with work progressing on a regular offsite tape backup as well.

COMPSOC has been unable to form a new committee for the previous two years leaving maintainance of COMPSOC to a single person. Noisy, COMPSOC's main machine had a hardware RAID failure (where the files are stored) and due to the lack of a backup a lot of data was lost. We apologise if you were one of the people who lost files. Moving on to 2010, we now have a new committee and new hardware. Noisy is gone and we have commissioned the following new servers:
- quiet - web server, email
- forgetful - file server
- chatterbox - routing, ldap, dns
- tickle - shells
- worry - backups, slaves
We also have a machine called daydream that we have something fun planned for. We're now close to having everything fully operational, including a full tape backup of COMPSOC.
